Review
Like Jean-Jacques Annaud’s earlier film, La
Guerre du feu, L’Ours tells a story without dialogue, using strong visual
images alone to engage the spectator. The film is cleverly shot so that the
story is seen from the perspective of a bear cub. A huge international box office
success, the film attracted nine million spectators in France alone. The film’s
subject matter makes it especially appealing to children, although the uncompromising
realism is a far cry from the sanitised world of Disney. For an adult viewer,
the film makes a striking metaphor of mankind’s innate cruelty and inability to respect
nature.

When a young bear cub’s mother is killed in a rock-fall, he must learn to fend for himself.
He attempts to pair up with a giant grizzly bear, but the latter, irritated by the youngster’s
attentions, pushes him away. After the grizzly is attacked by two hunters, the bear
cub comes to his rescue, helping to lick his wounds. Bear and cub form a natural
bond – which the hunters plan to exploit to lure the grizzly into a trap...
